In Year 6, the children will build on their knowledge, develop their skills and deepen their understanding through a wide range of interesting and engaging learning experiences across the curriculum. As the children move towards the end of their primary education, we encourage them to become increasingly independent, resilient and confident learners, ready to take on new challenges and prepare for the next stage of their educational journey.

Although subjects are taught discretely, we look for meaningful opportunities to make connections across the curriculum wherever possible, helping children to apply their knowledge and make their learning purposeful. We also provide opportunities for children to develop their creativity, curiosity, problem-solving skills and ability to think critically.

Throughout Year 6, we are committed to helping every child grow in confidence, curiosity and compassion, encouraging them to embrace challenges, celebrate their achievements and shine their light in all that they do.

Home Learning

We value the support that parents and carers provide with learning at home. These are our expectations for home learning during the year. Children should bring their book bag to school each day, containing their reading book, reading diary and RWI Spelling Log Book.

Reading 

Children should read at least three times each week. Please record and sign your child’s reading in their reading diary.

Regular reading is particularly important in Year 6 as it helps children to develop their fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and confidence as readers.

Spellings 

Children will regularly be given Read Write Inc. spellings to practise at home. These will include words linked to our current spelling focus, such as adding suffixes, as well as words from the Year 5 & 6 statutory spelling list, known as our Orange Words.

Times Tables 

Children should practise their multiplication and division facts regularly. They are expected to complete 15 minutes of practice on TT Rock Stars as part of their home learning.

Revision Guides 

From January to May, children will receive weekly revision homework using Rising Stars Revision Guides, which will be provided by school. Each child will have a Maths Revision Guide and a Reading Revision Guide to support their preparation for the end of Year 6 assessments.

Optional Theme-Based Home Learning 

We will also provide optional activities and suggested tasks to further enhance and extend your child’s learning. These activities will link to our current curriculum themes and can be found in the Class & Curriculum Overview Document in the Class Downloads section.

PE & Swimming 

In Year 6, children will have swimming lessons on Wednesdays until February half term. Children should bring the correct swimwear for their lessons:

• Girls: a one-piece swimming costume
• Boys: swimming trunks or short swimming shorts (no board shorts)
• A swimming cap
• A towel
• Goggles, if required

Children should come to school wearing their PE uniform on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Their PE kit should consist of:

• Trainers
• Shorts or skirt and/or jogging bottoms
• Navy PE T-shirt
• School sweatshirt or jumper

After February half term, our Wednesday swimming lessons will be replaced by a PE lesson, meaning that children will continue to wear their PE kit to school on both Wednesdays and Thursdays.
