SUMMER TERM LEARNING
SCIENCE:
How do humans grow, and how do our bodies change?
The first half of the term will focus on the different stages of the human life cycle. They will discuss a simple timeline first before going into more depth about what happens in the womb, during puberty and when you are older. We will be also comparing this to other animals to observe any differences, allowing the children to use their knowledge from their previous science unit!
Does the size of an asteroid affect the size of its impact crater?
The second half of the term will focus on working scientifically, getting the children to revisit their previous units throughout the year. These lessons will focus on getting the children to explore scientific enquiries and conduct multiple experiments, allowing them to engage their prior learning practically.
GEOGRAPHY:
Would You like to Live in a Desert?
The children will be recapping biomes with a prime focus on hot desert biomes and their various characteristics. They will map the largest global deserts. The Mojave Desert is used as a case study to support the children in learning about the physical features of a desert. Children also consider how humans use deserts and the environmental threats that can occur in this Landscape.
HISTORY:
What did the Greeks ever do for us?
We will focus on the Ancient Greeks, exploring what impact they have left for us today, alongside their achievements and influence on the Western world. This will be taught in the second half of the summer term. Both themes will be explored in depth across the curriculum, especially in History, allowing the children to make links to their learning throughout the rest of the school year. Lots of things to look forward to!
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:
In RE this term, we will be trialling a new Unit from the Lincolnshire Locally Agreed Syllabus 2025. It will focus on Inspirational Women who have impacted their societies throughout History. We being by looking at Christianity and Anne Askew. We will later explore Paganism and Philosophy by looking at the Ancient Egyptian, Hypatia. We will complete the unit by looking at Islam and a current, Iranian lady called Shirin Ebadi.
PSHE:
In this term, our PSHE topics are Relationships and Changing Me. We will be discussing how to create and foster healthy friendships, work effectively in group situations and build stronger bonds with our friends. We will continue to discuss the changes which will occur through puberty as well as how sexual intercourse or IVF can result in a baby. COMPUTING:
Sum 1 - How can we use stop motion animation to create a short film, combining images, sound and creativity to tell a story?
Our Summer Term’s Computing will be focusing on filming and video editing. We shall be using cameras to shoot our very own stop-motion animations to create and share media of differing lengths. We will be also be handling data and information about the Mars Rovers, looking further into binary code.
Sum 2- How can we design and program a Mars rover to navigate the surface of Mars, avoiding obstacles and completing tasks?
The children will be exploring how the Mars rover: moves, follows instructions, collects and sends data; understanding how computers work, what data is and how it is transferred.
PE:
Our PE & Games lessons will continue to be on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so on these days, the children should come into school in their kit. We will cover a range of PE options this term, with Striking & Fielding games and Athletics stretching over the two remaining terms. The children will take part in a programme of activities focusing on cricket and including long and short-distance running and throwing skills.
FRENCH:
1 - What Clothes are you Wearing?
By the end of this unit pupils will have the knowledge and skills necessary to describe what they are wearing in French by colour. Pupils will be able to express what they are wearing in full sentences in different scenarios in French.
2 - What Sports are in the Olympics?
Through the medium of this familiar and very popular event,Year 5 will be taught the skills to understand slightly longer and more complicated text in French.
MUSIC:
Do you know all the sounds that you can make?
The children will be exploring music from South and West Africa! We will be singing and using percussion instruments while exploring the cultures and traditions South and West Africa have to offer!
ART:
What architecture is good for art?
For Art this term, the children will be focusing on architecture, guiding pupils through observational drawing, printmaking, and building design. It encourages children to explore architectural elements, analyse Hundertwasser's work, and create meaningful monuments, enhancing their understanding of composition, design, and art appreciation.
