Welcome to the Year One class page. Miss Birch and Mrs Thompson are our class teachers and Mrs Barwell, Mrs Peters and Mrs Ball are our teaching assistants. Here you can find lots of information about Year One as well as keeping up to date with all of the exciting things that we get up to throughout the school year.
Year One
Our Learning
In Year 1 this term, the children will enjoy a wide range of exciting learning opportunities as they continue to build on the strong foundations developed throughout the year. In English, we will explore the classic texts 'The Selfish Giant' by Oscar Wilde and 'Hansel & Gretel' by Anthony Browne, developing vocabulary, spoken language and writing skills through carefully structured lessons. In Maths, the children will extend their understanding of number to 100, alongside learning about multiplication and division, fractions, time and money through practical and engaging activities.
Across the wider curriculum, the children will learn about plants in Science, explore significant individuals such as Joseph Banks in History, and compare life in Shanghai to their own in Geography. Creative learning will continue through Art, Design Technology, Music and Computing, alongside Physical Education and PSHE, making this another busy and engaging term of learning.
Please join our class on ClassDojo if you haven't already, to see what we have been getting up to, and keep checking the class webpage for general information and updates throughout the year.
Our Routine
In Year 1, our optional homework is given at the start of each new term, which will, where possible, have a fun and practical element to help enrich the children's learning. We love to celebrate the work children do in class or on ClassDojo, so please send it in for us to share.
Reading is such a valuable life skill and is also relevant across all subjects within school. Regular practise really does make a huge difference to reading ability, as does talking about what has been read with someone at home, too. Please try to ensure your child reads at home as often as possible (at least four times a week) and sign their Home & School diary to indicate that this has happened. Reading books will be changed regularly in line with our phonics programme, so please ensure your child's book is in school every day.
PE will take place in Year 1 on Wednesdays and Fridays. It is expected that your child will wear appropriate PE kit to school on these days. The correct PE kit consists of a white or navy t-shirt, navy shorts or skort, and black trainers/plimsolls. Navy joggers and a sweatshirt/hoody is an optional extra for when the weather is colder. Please ensure that all items of PE kit are clearly named and earrings are removed completely before each PE day. Thank you.
