Welcome to the Year Three class page. Mrs Hedley is our class teacher and Mrs Mawby and Mrs Kirk are our class teaching assistants. Here you can find lots of information about Year Three as well as keeping up to date with all of the exciting things that we get up to throughout the school year.
Year Three
Our Learning
LEARNING SUMMER TERM
SCIENCE:
In Science this half term, children will explore the topic of plants. They will learn what plants need to grow healthily and describe the structure and functions of flowering plants. Through investigation, they will explore how water is transported, the life cycle of flowering plants and different methods of seed dispersal. Pupils will also develop their scientific enquiry skills by posing questions, planning simple investigations, and recording and interpreting results using tables and bar charts.
In the second half of the Summer Term, Year 3 will take part in a ‘Making Connections’ unit, where they will revisit and apply prior knowledge to new contexts. This will deepen their understanding across different areas of Science. The children will further develop their working scientifically skills by carrying out a full scientific enquiry, from questioning and planning through to presenting and explaining their findings.
GEOGRAPHY:
IIn Geography, Year 3 pupils will develop their understanding of the United Kingdom and beyond. They will locate key cities and regions in the UK and describe the differences between villages, towns and cities. Using OS maps, they will identify features through map legends and follow simple routes. Pupils will explore different types of land use and consider why human and physical features are located where they are, as well as begin to identify changes in their local area.
They will also extend their learning internationally by studying New Delhi, describing its location and identifying key human and physical features. Pupils will compare these with their local area, helping them to understand similarities and differences in land use and environments around the world.
HISTORY:
In Summer Term 2, the children will explore Ancient Egypt as one of the world’s earliest civilisations. They will learn when and where ancient civilisations first appeared, locate Ancient Egypt on a map, and understand the importance of the River Nile. Pupils will develop their enquiry skills by asking historically valid questions about sources and studying key artefacts such as the Rosetta Stone. They will also learn about the role of gods and goddesses and explore beliefs about the afterlife, including mummification.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:
In R.E. the children will be exploring how people show their beliefs through the way they live their lives. They will do this by studying a case study based on The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe story.
PSHE:
Year 3 will be looking at the theme of Relationships for our Jigsaw PSHE lessons.
We will be able to give examples of things that we appreciate in our friends and family and also things we appreciate in people we don’t know, such as those from other countries. We will then consider how our lives are influenced positively by people we know and also by people from other countries.
MUSIC:
We will be basing our musical learning on traditional Indian instruments, improvisation and composition. The children will verbalise their feelings about music and identify their likes and dislikes. They will also learn to read musical notation, play the correct notes of the raga, and improvise along to a drone and a tala.
Following on from this, we will rehearse our singing and musical performances based on our learning throughout the year.
ART:
In the first half of the Summer Term, Year 3 will develop their artistic skills through a range of observational drawing and creative activities. They will use their observation skills to describe specific shapes, textures and patterns in objects, and begin their drawings by sketching simple shapes before adding detail and texture with lines and marks. Children will learn to shade with accuracy, following key shading rules, and apply these techniques to show areas of light and dark (tone). They will also explore mark-making to represent texture and detail.
COMPUTING:
In Computing, Year 3 pupils will explore the features and purpose of trailers, understanding how they are used to engage an audience and promote a story. They will plan their own book trailer by creating a storyboard and thinking about how each scene will be presented. Pupils will develop their skills by considering camera angles when taking photos or videos. They will then learn how to import their media into film-editing software.
PE:
Year 3 will continue to have PE on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, we will continue with our swimming lessons up to the Summer break. On Fridays, the children will develop their striking and fielding skills in cricket and fundamental games skills. As our PE lessons will be outdoors, it would be helpful if you could send your children to school with sun hats and wearing sun cream during hot weather.
Our Routine
In Year 3, your child will learn class high frequency words and RWI Logbook Spellings based on current spelling patterns. Spellings will be given weekly in school and tested regularly and informally by the form of mini quizzes.
It is expected that children make time to read some of their reading scheme book at least three times each week and alongside this are encouraged to choose a reading for pleasure class library book from our ‘Friday Library time’. This is invaluable and helps the children to develop a love of reading. Reading books will be changed regularly when adults signatures can be seen in your child’s reading diary. We encourage your child to read their reading scheme book at least twice before we change it so as to develop reading fluency and to discuss the questions at the back of the book to help their understanding.
Also it is expected that children complete TT Rockstars for 10 minutes/ 10 Garage sessions per week. Finally, please see our fun optional Homework tasks linked to our current theme if your child wishes to attempt any of them.
PE will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays in Year Three. It is expected that your child will have the appropriate indoor and outdoor PE kit available on these days. The correct PE kit consists of: a white t-shirt, navy shorts or skort and plimsolls for indoor sports. Trainers are requested for outdoor activities. A navy tracksuit is required for outdoor activities, when the weather is colder. Please ensure all of your child's clothing is labelled - then we can make sure the correct item of 'lost' clothing goes to its rightful owner.
