WW2 memorabilia

WW2 memorabilia

As part of our learning in Year 6 about the World Wars, in particular learning about our local history, we were delighted when one of our pupils was able to bring in a large collection of WW2 memorabilia to share with us. This belonged to Alfie's Great Great Grandad who served in both WW1 and WW2!

Alfie was able to talk through lots of the objects and what they were and his Granny provided us with lots of extra information to help our understanding. Alfie's Great Great Grandad, from Grantham, served in lots of different countries including Egypt, Tunisia, Norway as well as France and Belgium. He had a very busy career with the army. We were amazed to see a certificate presented to him by the King of Norway in 1945 as he was one of the first soldiers to liberate Norway. We also looked at his regimental baton, medals and badges as well as items such as ration books and identity cards.

We particularly enjoyed looking at the photos that Alfie's Granny had sent us to look at, including one of the women who worked in the factory in Grantham while their husbands were serving in the war and the football team they formed! We also loved the photos that he must have sent back to his wife while he was away at war.

Thank you so much Alfie and your family for sharing this wonderful collection with us.
