Y4 Visit 'The Galleries of Justice' in Nottingham
As part of our crime and punishment topic ‘The God, The Bad and The Ugly’ Year Four went to 'The Galleries of Justice' in Nottingham.
The children took part in a Crime and Punishment Tour where they witnessed a real trial in the original Victorian Courtroom. Jayden was put in the dock, before he was sentenced and ‘sent down’! We explored the original cells, prison laundry, medieval caves and authentic prison exercise yard. Prisoners and gaolers acted as our guides around this dramatic site. We learnt about work, leisure, health and religion ‘behind bars’. We also found out about prison reform and compared Victorian conditions with those in cells today.
During the afternoon session the children took part in a CSI type of investigation. The children had to find clues to see if they could discover who had committed the crime using Victorian methods of investigation.
We all had a fantastic day and would recommend this day out to anyone interested in crime and punishment through the ages!
